Phuket airport to Khao Lak

An hour to an hour and a half by road, and every option is a vehicle — there is no rail and no public bus running north. Here is how the three real choices compare.

HKT → Khao Lak · ≈ 70–80 km · Route 4Facts checked 5 August 2026 · updated seasonally

The options

Private car
Door to door, ≈ 1 h – 1 h 30, roughly ฿1,500–2,200 — indicative.
Driver waits at arrivals if prebooked.
Shared minivan
Cheapest seat, roughly ฿300–500 per person — waits to fill, then drops along the Khao Lak strip.
Slower in practice than the road time suggests.
Ride-hail
Apps work at HKT, but a 70 km trip prices close to a prebooked private car — and the return pickup from Khao Lak is less reliable than at the airport.

The one thing to know before landing

Phuket airport’s public transport points the wrong way for Khao Lak: the smart buses and airport buses run south into Phuket. Northbound, the market is private — which is why the arrivals hall is a row of minivan and taxi counters. None of this is a scam; it is simply the only game, so compare a counter quote against a prebooked price rather than against a bus fare that does not exist.

Timing: most Khao Lak hotels are 60–90 minutes from the terminal. For early-morning departures the same math applies in reverse — leave the strip about three hours before an international flight.

Questions

Common questions

How do you get to Khao Lak?
Fly into Phuket International (HKT) and go north by road — there is no airport at Khao Lak, no railway, and no public bus running that direction. The journey is 1 to 1.5 hours, and the three real choices are a private car, a shared minivan, or a ride-hail. Krabi and Surat Thani airports also work but are further away.
How far is Khao Lak from Phuket airport?
Roughly 70–80 km, almost all of it straight up Phetkasem Road (Route 4). Allow 1 to 1.5 hours rather than judging it by the distance — the time depends on traffic leaving the airport and where on the Khao Lak strip you are staying.
How long is the transfer from Phuket airport to Khao Lak?
About 1 to 1.5 hours for the roughly 70–80 km up Phetkasem Road (Route 4), depending on traffic leaving the airport and where on the Khao Lak strip you are staying.
Is there a public bus from the airport to Khao Lak?
No. The airport bus lines run south into Phuket town — the opposite direction. Going north you are choosing between a private car, a shared minivan, or a ride-hail.
Should you prebook or arrange it on arrival?
Both work. Minivan and taxi counters in arrivals will sell you a seat or a car on the spot. Prebooking gets you a named driver waiting with a sign and a fixed price — worth it for late-evening arrivals, when counters thin out.
