Getting to Khao Lak

There is no airport here and no ferry port. Everything starts as a road transfer — this is what actually runs, and what it honestly costs.

Phuket · Krabi · the islandsUpdated seasonally

Khao Lak is a stretch of coast, not a transport hub. Almost everyone arrives the same way — fly into Phuket, then drive north for an hour and a half — and almost every island trip works the other way round, driving to a pier before any boat is involved.

That single fact decides most of the planning. The two guides below cover the arrival leg and the island leg separately, because they fail in different ways: the airport run is a question of price and comfort, and the ferry run is a question of season.

Nearest airport
Phuket (HKT)
Roughly 70–80 km south. There is no airport at Khao Lak itself.
Ferry port
None
Island trips leave from Phuket or Krabi. Khao Lak has no pier of its own.
Public bus
Not a realistic option
No direct public bus runs north from the airport. Plan on a car, minivan or ride-hail.
Marine parks
Closed 15 May – 15 Oct
Similan and Surin shut for the monsoon, which changes what a boat transfer is even for.

Distances and closures are stable; fares move. Treat any price on this site as indicative and check with the operator.

Two things worth checking

Second, confirm the pickup point rather than the town. Khao Lak runs for about twenty kilometres along Route 4, and a transfer quoted to “Khao Lak” may mean a beach half an hour from your hotel. Give the operator the property name.
