There is no town to stay near

Khao Lak is five or six beaches with a village behind each, 20 to 30 minutes apart by road. There is no single high street, and the beaches do not run into one another. Booking a resort at the north end because the photographs were better, then discovering the restaurants you read about are half an hour south, is the common mistake here.

Every hotel we list is four or five star

Worth saying plainly, because it shapes what you can expect. The thirteen Khao Lak properties in our catalogue are four-star or five-star, nine of them five. We carry no budget or guesthouse tier.

That is not a claim that nothing cheaper exists on this coast. It means this site cannot help you find it, and a page that implied otherwise would be wasting your time.

The transfer is part of the price

No airport at Khao Lak, and no realistic public bus north from Phuket. Every arrival is a car or minivan, and it is a real journey rather than a hop. A resort at the far north end costs more to reach than one at the south, every time you move.

Factor it in twice. Once on arrival and departure, and again for any day trip, because the boats leave from piers that are themselves a drive away.

Book around the marine park calendar, not the weather

The Similan and Surin national parks close roughly 15 May to 15 October. If islands are why you are coming, the hotel date matters less than the park date, and no resort will tell you at the point of booking that the thing you came for is shut.

Khao Sok and the elephant sanctuaries run year round, so an off-season stay is not a wasted one. It is a different holiday.

Where is the best place to stay in Khao Lak?

There is no single answer, because Khao Lak is five or six separate beaches rather than one resort strip. Nang Thong has the most walkable cluster of restaurants and shops, Bang Sak and Pakarang are the quietest, and they are 20 to 30 minutes apart by road.

Do you need a car in Khao Lak?

You need some way to move between beaches. There is no public bus worth planning around, so it is a hire car, a scooter, or paying for a taxi each time. A resort with everything you want inside it reduces the problem rather than removing it.

How far is Khao Lak from Phuket airport?

Roughly 70 to 80 kilometres north, and there is no airport at Khao Lak itself. Plan on a private transfer or a shared minivan.

Is Khao Lak worth it in the low season?

It depends what you came for. The Similan and Surin marine parks close roughly 15 May to 15 October, so island trips are out. Khao Sok and the elephant sanctuaries run all year.
