Staying at Bang Niang

Bang Niang is the beach to choose if you want a village within walking distance instead of a resort you stay inside. Restaurants, massage shops, tour desks and convenience stores sit behind the sand, so a week here works without a scooter.

What it is like

Bang Niang has a real village behind the beach, which is the thing the other quiet stretches of this coast do not have. There is a night market that runs on several evenings a week, though listings disagree on which days, so ask your hotel rather than plan a dinner around one. The shops, restaurants and tour desks are all within walking distance of the beach hotels.

About two kilometres inland is Police Boat 813, a patrol boat carried off the water by the 2004 tsunami and left where it came to rest. It is the clearest surviving marker of what happened on this coast, and it is a memorial rather than an attraction.

Who it suits

  • Anyone who wants to walk to dinner and does not want to hire a scooter.
  • Couples and families who would rather be near a village than isolated in a resort.
  • First-time visitors who are not sure which Khao Lak beach to pick. Bang Niang is the most practical base on the coast.

Who should look elsewhere

If you want the widest choice of restaurants, bars and dive shops, Nang Thong has the greatest concentration of them. If you want a long empty beach and plan to stay in your resort, Bang Sak is the better fit. Bang Niang sits between the two.

Which hotel

The hotels we cover on this beach differ more by style than by location. La Flora is an adults-only boutique resort. La Vela has direct access to the beach on the busiest stretch of Khao Lak. X10 is a family resort with separate family and beach wings. Each is listed below with a link to its own page, where you can check dates on the booking partner's site.

When to come

The sea is generally calm from November through April. During the southwest monsoon, roughly May to October, red flags go up along this coast because of rip currents, and a good share of the businesses behind the beach close. Check when to come before you pick dates.

Getting here

Bang Niang is roughly 70 to 80 km from Phuket airport, and the drive takes 1 to 1.5 hours. There is no public bus going north, so plan the transfer before you fly.

Questions

Common questions

Is Bang Niang a good beach to stay on?
It is the most practical base on this coast if you want to walk to restaurants and shops. If you would rather have the widest range of places to eat, look at Nang Thong, and if you want an empty beach, look at Bang Sak.
Do you need a scooter at Bang Niang?
Not if you stay near the village. The restaurants, shops and tour desks are within walking distance of the beach hotels. Anywhere further north, some form of transport becomes close to essential.
What is Police Boat 813?
It is a police patrol boat that the 2004 tsunami carried about two kilometres inland. It was left where it came to rest as a memorial, near Bang Niang. It is a place to pay respects rather than a tourist attraction.
Is there a night market at Bang Niang?
Yes, a market runs on several evenings a week. Listings disagree on the exact days, so check with your hotel on arrival.
Can you swim at Bang Niang?
In high season, yes. From roughly May to October red flags go up because of rip currents, and swimming is often unsafe. If a flag is flying, stay out of the water.
