Diving from Khao Lak

The season is a regulation, not a recommendation

This is the fact worth getting straight before you book flights. Khao Lak’s diving is almost entirely inside two marine national parks, and those parks close through the southwest monsoon — roughly 15 May to 15 October. It is not a case of rougher seas and fewer boats. Boats do not go.

Everything else follows from that. Liveaboard schedules, dive-shop staffing, and hotel rates along this coast all pivot on the same two dates, which is why a Khao Lak holiday planned for August looks nothing like one planned for January.

The exact dates move. The Department of National Parks confirms them each year and they shift by a few days either way, so treat trips in the first or last fortnight of the season as provisional until the announcement lands.

What the boats actually go to

The route runs north from Thap Lamu, and the further a trip goes, the more nights it needs.

The Similans — nine granite islands about 60 km offshore. The east sides are gentle coral slopes; the west sides are the boulder swim-throughs the park is known for. Every itinerary includes them.

Koh Bon — a limestone ridge north of the Similans, and the manta encounter most people are hoping for. No guarantees: mantas are wild animals visiting a cleaning station, and any operator promising them is promising something they do not control.

Koh Tachai — worth being precise about, because tour pages muddle it. The island has been closed to visitors since 2016 and no boat lands on the beach. The pinnacle offshore is a different thing entirely, and longer liveaboards still dive it.

Richelieu Rock — a submerged horseshoe pinnacle in Mu Ko Surin National Park, and the site with the whale shark reputation. It is far enough north that only multi-night trips reach it. If a day trip from Khao Lak claims it, check what they actually mean.

Day trip or liveaboard

The honest version: a day trip is a long day for three dives. Pickup is before dawn, the crossing is an hour or more each way in a speedboat, and the surface intervals happen on a moving boat. It works if you have one free day and want to see the Similans underwater.

A liveaboard is a different activity. Four dives a day including a night dive, no transit burned twice, and access to the northern sites a day boat cannot reach. Three nights is the point where Koh Bon and Koh Tachai become realistic; Richelieu Rock generally wants more.

If you are learning: certification courses run here, but the shore diving is limited and most training happens from boats. Ask where the confined-water sessions take place before you book a course sold as “Similan Open Water”.

The parts nobody puts in the brochure

There is no recompression chamber in Khao Lak. The nearest facilities are in Phuket, roughly 90 minutes away by road. That is not a reason to avoid diving here — it is a reason to ask your operator what their evacuation plan is, and to carry insurance that explicitly covers recreational diving to your depth.

Leave 18 to 24 hours between your last dive and your flight. Nearly everyone flies out of Phuket, so the drive south comes out of the same window. A liveaboard that docks the morning of an evening flight is cutting it far finer than it looks on the itinerary.

Nitrox and equipment. Most boats offer nitrox and full rental kit, usually as a supplement rather than included. Worth confirming in writing if you need larger sizes or a specific computer — restocking mid-season is not quick out here.
